Food Intolerance Testing

Food Intolerance and food allergy are very different, although often they can be difficult to separate because symptoms caused by them can overlap.

food intolerance testingFood allergy triggers the immune system, while food intolerance does not. Some people suffer digestive problems after eating certain foods even though their immune system has not reacted – there is no histamine response.

Food Intolerances can be caused by several different digestive functional problems. These problems can include digestive enzyme deficiency, disturbed gut bacteria balance, yeast overgrowth, intestinal parasites, the physical damaged caused by abrasive food compounds on gut lining and leaky gut syndrome.

Certain chemicals in foods and drinks can also cause intolerance, including amines in some cheeses, and caffeine in coffee, tea and chocolates. Some people are more susceptible to these chemicals than others.

According to the Australian NSW Food Authority, the following are the most common symptoms of food intolerance:

  • Bloating
  • Migraine
  • Headaches
  • Cough
  • Runny nose
  • Feeling under the weather
  • Stomach ache
  • Irritable bowel
  • Hives

Other symptoms we have identified as strongly linked to food intolerance are fatigue, joint pain, weight problems and the overproduction of mucus is all areas of the body that have mucosa lining cells.

In the UK, NHS resources often do not allow a thorough investigation into understanding an individual’s pattern of reaction leaving many people to cope with chronic uncomfortable symptoms that can impact greatly on their lives.

The good news is that food intolerances are usually not permanent. Once understood, the digestive functional problems that cause food intolerances can usually be successfully turned around to leave the sufferer symptom free.

Acuhealth offers 3 methods to identify and treat food intolerances.

  1. Exclusion diet and challenge testing.
  2. IgG blood testing.
  3. Bioelectrical Impedance Measurement.
